My Design Philosophy

In a world of cheaply made, disposable furniture, my goal is to create works of art that will last for generations, and that are as delightful in everyday use as they are the day I deliver them to your home. There are many considerations for designing and making beautiful, functional furniture that will age gracefully, and here are just a few I keep in mind:

  • It’s always worth taking some extra time to be deliberate about which lumber is used where. Each board is unique, and there are often opportunities to create interesting symmetries or contrasts in grain, or to align the flow of grain with particular forms.

  • Seasonal wood movement is inevitable and must be accounted for in order for a piece to last.

  • Furniture should be easy to clean, and after many years easy to refinish. This means no grooves, coves, or other decorative features that tend to collect grime.

  • Designs should not seek to emulate woodworking trends, which will quickly make furniture appear dated when they pass.

  • The tactile experience is as important, if not more, than the appearance of a piece, so it’s essential to treat every surface that might be touched with the same care as the visible surfaces, and sharp edges should be rounded or chamfered.

About Me

My name is Oscar Christoph, and I started Christoph Fine Woodworking in 2023 to pursue woodworking as a professional career. My appreciation for woodworking and particularly fine furniture began in my childhood growing up around heirloom pieces that my grandfather had restored, and at fourteen I refinished an end table with him as my first real project. Ever since, I have made woodworking a part of my life.
